Josh Groban's 'Noel' climbs to No. 1 November 28, 2007 02:11 PM By LiveDaily Staff Josh Groban's holiday album "Noel" moves up one notch to No. 1 on the latest Billboard 200 album chart after selling 405,000 copies during its most recent week in stores. Groban's surprise appearance last week on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" is credited for the album's ascension to the top spot after seven weeks on the chart.
Alicia Keys' "As I Am," last week's No. 1 album, falls to No. 2 this week on sales of 349,000, according to Billboard, which bases its chart on Nielsen SouncScan retail reports.
The hits compilation "NOW 26" moves up one spot to No. 3 on sales of 234,000, while Garth Brooks' "The Ultimate Hits" climbs one rung to No. 4 on sales of 192,000. The Eagles' "Long Road Out of Eden" moves from No. 6 to No. 5 on sales of 184,000 during its latest week in stores.
Rounding out the Top 10 are the "High School Musical 2" soundtrack, Carrie Underwood 's "Carnival Ride," Celine Dion's "Taking Chances," Chris Brown's "Exclusive" and Jordin Sparks' self-titled debut.

Oprah Winfrey gives Josh Groban a big boost
After appearing on her show, he sees 'Noel's' sales spike 81% to finish the week at No. 1. By Todd Martens, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer November 29, 2007 Josh Groban's holiday effort "Noel" had already spent six weeks on the U.S. pop album chart, but all it took was one afternoon on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" to propel it to the top. Sales of "Noel" are up 81% over last week, to 405,000 copies.
Groban's big week brings total sales of "Noel" above 1 million, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Billboard cites it as the first Christmas album to top the chart since Kenny G's "Miracles" in 1994.
Last week's No. 1 album, Alicia Keys' "As I Am," dropped to No. 2. In just two weeks, Keys' third studio collection has topped the 1 million mark. Sales of the album declined 53% in its second week but still posted a respectable 349,000 copies.
The only newcomer in the Top 10 is the debut album from "American Idol" winner Jordin Sparks. The album sold 119,000 copies -- the lowest first-week figure and chart debut position from an "Idol" champ.
Meanwhile, former "Idol" winner Carrie Underwood is No. 7 with "Carnival Ride," which sold 141,000 copies.
Disney's soundtrack to "High School Musical 2" shot back into the Top 10, landing at No. 6, with sales up 130% over the previous week, to 183,000 copies. With 2.3 million in total sales, it is 2007's top-selling album. If it can hold onto its lead over Chris Daughtry's "Daughtry" for another month, it would be the second year the "High School Musical" franchise has had the No. 1 album. "Daughtry" has sold 2.21 million in 2007.
Although Thanksgiving shoppers helped 11 albums on this week's chart sell more than 100,000 copies each, overall sales significantly trail those of the same week one year ago. Sales are down about 18% compared with last year's holiday.

We Attempt to Explain Josh Groban but Fail Categories: rants, music We were going to use this post to explain Josh Groban, but we decided we couldn't. Explain him. You either have the Josh Groban gene or you don't. So, call up your mother right now, apologize for all those mean things you said about her taste in music and tell her you understand.
By the last crack, we don't mean to say that (a) only mothers like Josh Groban; or that (b) only mothers who have bad taste in music like Josh Groban. This would be inaccurate. Because we know some women who are not mothers also like Josh Groban, although they're really partial to Celtic Woman. (And no, we are not going to explain Celtic Woman, either, other than to note it's a group of singers, not a singular superhero. Look for them on your local PBS station's next pledge drive.)
In any case, as your mother could tell you, Josh Groban is wildly popular. After listening to Noël, Groban's wildly popular new Christmas album, we can tell your mother has an ear for talent. Groban can certainly sing. His voice is as warm as his eyes are dewy and his curly hair limpid. No wonder your mother likes him. She probably wants to give him a hug, wrap him in a blanket and spoon him some hot soup—"Doesn't the boy look like he's all wet?"
Noël is Groban's attempt at a classic Christmas album, meaning it covers the classics, from "Silent Night" on down. It's big and lush and, if not as satisfying to the soul as Nat King Cole, then it'll delight mothers, sorry, people who wear snowman sweaters and start listening to holiday music in mid-November on all-holiday-music, all-the-time radio stations. (And if those same radio stations aren't already playing Groban's "I'll Be Home for Christmas," complete with snippets from Iraq-stationed soldiers, then we don't know America.)
As you might have surmised, we respect Groban, but we don't have the Groban gene. The biggest charge we got out of Noël was from the new track "Thankful," where we thought our boy had cut loose, made a goof, and/or briefly lost his mild-mannered mind. "So, tonight we pray for/ What we no can be..." Groban sang, and we stopped: "What we no can be...?" The lyric came around again, and there it was again, "What we no can be." Was it a tribute to cavemen? A sly statement on the state of public-school education? What?
It was a homophone. The lyric, it turns out is, "What we know can be."
Wait...Does mishearing a song mean we've turned into our mother?
Maybe we have the Groban gene, after all.
